U.S Forces Children to Work in Time of Need

The Great Depression

Children after working in the factories or coal mines.
Hello readers! Have you ever wondered about what happened in the U.S way back with child labor? Well, in the U.S during the time of The Great Depression, child labor boomed in factories. In the information I read on the History Channels website about child labor it say's, "Children were useful as laborers because their size allowed them to move in small spaces in factories or mines where adults couldn't fit, children were easier to manage and control and perhaps most importantly, children could be paid less than adults."  This quote makes me feel disappointed in how our country ran back then.

I feel like even though having children work in the factories seemed logical, it is still very wrong in many ways. First of all even if you are going to hire kids to work for your company in such harsh conditions, you should treat them like adults; they should have paid them the same amount of money. In the quote it says that children are easier to control. Kids at such a young age are wild and have a ton of energy. I feel so strongly about kids having there own childhood. They should be able to go to school and lear; not risk there life every day in a factory. Also the U.S could have hired adults who were smaller, instead of forcing kids to work. If you were a kid and were being forced to work, would you like it?

  1. I agree with you but I think the kids shouldn't be working period. If they are then I think they should be treated like kids because they are kids and not adults. They shouldn't have the responsibilities of adults. They should not work as long as adults also.
