Hello everyone. Have you ever read
The Hunger Games, or seen the movie? It is personally the best book series I have read so far. Also, I enjoyed the movie, and cannot wait for Catching Fire movie, the second book in The Hunger Game triology, to come out. If you haven't read the books or seen the movie, then you are probably living under a rock. In all seriousness, the book is about America becoming "corrupt", and everyone has rebelled against the government. America has been divided now into twelve different districts. There is a capital that is in charge of all the districts, and is where the leader of all the districts live. The first district is the richest and the twelfth is the most poor. Every year one boy and one girl of the ages twelve to eighteen come from each district, and fight to the death, until there is one survivor left. This is called The Hunger Games, which is broadcasted and becomes a huge event of entertainment to most.
Even though The Hunger Games is very entertaining, have you ever thought about the deeper meaning of the story line? It really is portraying child slavery through the story line. The capital is forcing kids to fight and kill each other to amuse others. I personally love the books and the movie, but it is teaching kids that violence is ok. Also, the capital has enslaved the other districts to serve, and satisfy there needs. Essentially, the capital and all living inside of it obtain all power, while ever one else must do what they say. Isn't that the same thing as modern/colonial slavery?

Kids training to fight in the actual games |
I believe that The Hunger Game's series are very entertaining, but sending out the wrong message to kids. They are showing that one has no freedom of there selves, and must do whatever the "capital" says. In this case the capital is the government. America today though lets citizens have freedom of speech and actions. Also, the series states multiple times how corrupt America was, so they had to go against the government and start thirteen new districts.
I think it is wrong to have children of such young ages killing each other. And the sickening part is that adults are amused by the violence. Children should not be forced to kill, they should go to school and learn. What do you think about all of this?
I love the fact that you used a popular book as your evidence.Your transition from what you thought of the series/movie to how America is like the country in the Hunger Games (I don't know what it is called). I agree that kids should not be used to fight in arenas for entertainment. But, it reminds me of gladiators in arenas fighting for entertainment. Gladiators were sometimes slaves that didn't want to fight but they had to. A question for you that I have is that how would kids in reality respond to this if they did know the "true" meaning of the Hunger Games?
ReplyDeleteI love your question, it's really thought provoking. I do wonder the same thing, but do you think that the whole Hunger Games series is about child slavery? Yes, I do see some child slavery in there but maybe it could also have another real world meaning. For me the Hunger Games is like a more realistic way of describing today's world. For example, the capital, where all of the magic happens and all of the richer upper class people stay. When you watch the movie these people can be shown as richer people wearing outrageous things, because they can with all of their riches and they enjoy more of the material things and entertainment, like the Hunger Games, expensive clothing. However, when you go all the way to District 12, the poorest district has barely anything and they fight for anything even the littles things. This is like the more poorer areas in todays society, where people can fight for things and the richer people can get anything they want. Maybe I'm just going crazy but thats just how I see it.
