What Really Happens in Chocolate Factories

Chocolate Factories Use Child Labor

Chocolate- a food made out of cocoa beans; usually turned into food that is enjoyed by many. Have you ever wondered what really happens where they make chocolate? Many companies like Hershey, use child labor inside of there factories. The cocoa bean comes from Africa, which usually get farmed by children. Later on, you will learn why companies hire children to do this.

Jessie on The Moonlight

The Moonlight

Picture saying that child slavery should be abolished, again
In our 8th grade class we are reading a book called The Moonlight. It is about a boy that is kidnapped, and being forced to work on the slave ship. This is a form of child labor. A boy around the age of fourteen or thirteen is being kidnapped to play an instrument on the ship. If he does not play then he will most likely get thrown overboard, or get whipped multiple times. This is similar to modern day child labor. Today children are kidnaped, like Jessie, and forced to work on farms, or in sweat shops etc. If they try and rebel or run away then they will get punished. Things have not changed with child labor for over one hundred years.

The Real Meaning Behind The Hunger Games

Hunger Games; The Real Meaning Behind It

The logo of the first book and movie in The Hunger Games trilogy

Hello everyone. Have you ever read The Hunger Games, or seen the movie? It is personally the best book series I have read so far. Also, I enjoyed the movie, and cannot wait for Catching Fire movie, the second book in The Hunger Game triology, to come out. If you haven't read the books or seen the movie, then you are probably living under a rock. In all seriousness, the book is about America becoming "corrupt", and everyone has rebelled against the government. America has been divided now into twelve different districts. There is a capital that is in charge of all the districts, and is where the leader of all the districts live. The first district is the richest and the twelfth is the most poor. Every year one boy and one girl of the ages twelve to eighteen come from each district, and fight to the death, until there is one survivor left. This is called The Hunger Games, which is broadcasted and becomes a huge event of entertainment to most.

Even though The Hunger Games is very entertaining, have you ever thought about the deeper meaning of the story line? It really is portraying child slavery through the story line. The capital is forcing kids to fight and kill each other to amuse others. I personally love the books and the movie, but it is teaching kids that violence is ok. Also, the capital has enslaved the other districts to serve, and satisfy there needs. Essentially, the capital and all living inside of it obtain all power, while ever one else must do what they say. Isn't that the same thing as modern/colonial slavery?

U.S Forces Children to Work in Time of Need

The Great Depression

Children after working in the factories or coal mines.
Hello readers! Have you ever wondered about what happened in the U.S way back with child labor? Well, in the U.S during the time of The Great Depression, child labor boomed in factories. In the information I read on the History Channels website about child labor it say's, "Children were useful as laborers because their size allowed them to move in small spaces in factories or mines where adults couldn't fit, children were easier to manage and control and perhaps most importantly, children could be paid less than adults."  This quote makes me feel disappointed in how our country ran back then.

Children Working Illegally/Forcefully

Child Labor

Child labor is one of the most commonly known forms of slavery. It is "practiced" in many different ways. In other countries like india and Africa and India if a family is in debt, they can sell there child as slaves. Also, children can be kidnapped and work illegally on farms, in sweat shops, etc. Today 250 million children between the ages of five and fourteen are being put to work against there own will.
In India and the countries around it, kid's are being put to work in sweat shops and in mines looking for coal or gems. I think it is wrong to have a child do work against there own will. When they are in the mines, it is a high risk factor, and they have a high chance of loosing there lives. Also they have to work in tight spaces which is bad for there bodies. Also they have to carrie heavy bricks on there heads, fro place to place. They could easily die if they can not stand the weight of the bricks, and collapse.

Slavery started in Mesopotamian societies, but became popular in ancient Europe; later on people started trading slaves for profit. Slave traders went to Africa, capture the Africans and board them on ships. The trade of was called the Middle passage because; they would use the triangular trade route. Like back then, slavery is still going on illegally; the most commonly “practiced” form of Modern day slavery is Child labor. Countries like Africa and India use child labor in coalmines, fashion factories, etc. Also countries traffick children into other countries, like America, so the children can serve them in whatever ways they need. In the blog I will be writing about child slavery I want to show people how wrong it is to force children to do manual labor and act as slaves.
